How to register with a GP on Hayling Island
Everyone in England can register with a GP surgery for free (NHS: register with a GP surgery). The main routes are:
- Online through the NHS website: search your postcode, choose a surgery that offers online registration and fill in the form, which the NHS says takes about 15 minutes per person. You should usually be told you are registered within 5 days of the surgery receiving your details, though it may take longer.
- At the surgery: collect a paper form from reception, or download the NHS paper form and hand it in.
- By phone: each practice's nhs.uk "How to register" page suggests phoning reception (Waterside, Elms).
The NHS says you do not need proof of address, ID, immigration status or an NHS number to register online with a GP. You will be asked for things like your name and address, your current GP if you have one, your NHS number if you know it, an emergency contact, and brief medical history, allergies and medication.
Most GPs only accept patients who live in the area they cover. Each practice's nhs.uk page has a catchment checker where you enter your postcode. If you live in Northney, North Hayling or elsewhere on the island, use that checker rather than assuming.
If you are changing GP and you have the NHS App, you can change surgery there. You do not need to tell your old surgery, as they are told automatically.
Out of hours and when the surgery is closed
Both practices are closed at weekends according to nhs.uk. When your GP is closed, NHS 111 can direct you to the best place to get help, which may include an evening and weekend GP, an urgent treatment centre, a nurse callback or a pharmacist. 111 online is for people aged 5 and over, and you should call 111 for a child under 5. In an emergency, call 999. Our urgent care guide lists the nearest urgent treatment centres.
Repeat prescriptions, appointments and the NHS App
Both practices' nhs.uk pages point to online and prescription services and the NHS App. Which online services are switched on is set by each practice, so check the practice website: Waterside and The Elms both list appointments, prescriptions, sick notes, test results and registration on their home pages.
