Hayling Island Bin Collection Days & Recycling Guide
Hayling Island's bins are collected by Havant Borough Council on an alternating weekly cycle. Here is how to find your day, what goes in each bin and what to do if a collection is missed.
Check your Hayling Island bin day at havant.gov.uk/where-i-live or the waste.havant.gov.uk portal. Rubbish and recycling alternate weekly; bins must be at your boundary by 7am. Garden waste for 2026/27 is £92.48 (240 litre) or £63.10 (140 litre). Report missed bins by 4pm the next working day.
Finding your bin day
Hayling Island is in Havant Borough Council's area, so the council sets your collection day, and it varies by street. The quickest check is the council's "Where I live" service at havant.gov.uk/where-i-live: enter your postcode and look under waste and recycling. The council also publishes digital calendars for its North and South areas for 2026, which you can reach from its bin collections page.
You can also log in to the council's customer portal at waste.havant.gov.uk. The council says it shows collection schedules for household waste, recycling and garden waste, lets you see rescheduled collections and report a missed bin, and supports more than one address per account.
How the alternate-week system works
Havant runs an alternate weekly service from wheeled bins: one week is rubbish, the next is recycling. Your day of the week stays the same but the bin that goes out swaps each week, so check the calendar or portal rather than relying on memory, particularly around bank holidays.
Put your bin at the boundary of your property by 7am on collection day. The council collects bins that are out on time and accessible.
What goes in the recycling bin
Recycling goes in the green-top black bin, collected fortnightly. The council says items should be clean, dry and loose. It accepts:
- Paper such as newspapers, magazines and junk mail, and cardboard such as cereal packets and food boxes
- Plastic food and drink bottles
- Food and drink tins and cans, including pet food tins
- Aerosols such as deodorant and hairspray
It does not accept shredded paper, gift wrap, laminated paper, paper towels, tissues, pizza boxes, paint tins, dirty or part-full tins, or bottles that still contain liquid. Extra recycling can be left beside the bin in clear plastic sacks or cardboard boxes.
Glass, pots, tubs and soft plastics
Glass cannot go in your home recycling bin. The council directs you to the borough's glass recycling banks. Hard plastic pots and tubs, such as yoghurt pots and margarine tubs, are not collected at the kerbside and go to separate plastic recycling bins. Soft plastics can be recycled at most supermarkets, according to the council. Check the council's recycling page and its plastic recycling sites page for locations.
What goes in the rubbish bin
The black refuse bin takes plastic packaging such as food pots, tubs and trays, plastic bags and film, food waste, disposable nappies, pet waste, polystyrene, bottle tops, shredded paper and Tetra Paks. It does not take building waste such as bricks, rubble and soil, garden waste, hazardous or clinical waste, hot ashes, commercial waste or wood. The council collects one black bin per household unless an extra bin has been authorised, and extra waste left beside or on top of the bin is not collected. Households with five or more permanent residents, or with specific medical needs, may be able to apply for an additional bin.
Garden waste (2026/27)
Garden waste is a paid, opt-in service using a brown wheeled bin. For 2026-27 the council lists:
- 240 litre bin: £92.48
- 140 litre bin: £63.10
Collections are every two weeks except over Christmas and New Year, 25 collections a year. Subscriptions run 1 April to 31 March, or from the date of payment if later; the council asks new subscribers to register by 15 March for an April start. A refund is only given if you cancel within 10 working days of paying. Sign up at waste.havant.gov.uk. Grass, hedge cuttings, small branches, leaves, weeds and real Christmas trees are accepted; soil, rubble, treated wood, food scraps and items in plastic or compostable sacks are not. See the garden waste page.
Missed collection
If your bin was out by 7am and not emptied, report it through the customer portal by 4pm on the working day after your collection. The council says crews usually return within two working days. You can also phone 023 9244 6019. Bulky items that will not fit in a bin are covered in our tip and bulky waste guide.
